Ajmer Singh’s family was the resident of Mukandpur Village in Jalandhar before partition. However, he later settled in Patna, Bihar.
Ajmer Singh was married to Balbir Kaur who was much more inclined towards folk music at that time. He has successfully passed on his love for singing in his six sons namely Shamsher Singh Mehandi, Amarjit Singh, Joginder Singh, Harjit Mehandi, Daler Mehandi and Mika Singh. He was also the father of two beautiful daughters Chanranjit Kaur and Gurmeet Kaur.
Ajmer Singh was a trained classical musician and sang devotional shabads in the revered Patna Sahib Gurudwara as the Head Priest. He was trained extensively in Gwalior and Benaras Gharana of Indian Classical Music. He even served in Gurudwaras of Delhi, Bassi Pathana and Patna.
All his kids dedicate their careers to their father who taught them the art of music from their childhood. Mika and Daler Mehandi have a great fanclub all round the globe only because of their loving father. While Mika and Daler became pop singers, Harjeet shifted to playing tabla and Shamsher expertises in Tabla as well as Dholak. Ajmer Singh's daughter in law Nikki (Daler Mehandi's Wife) was highly inspired by his singing and became his pupil to obtain training in formal indian classical genre. He was not only a singer but was also the source of inspiration for all the members of his family.
He was a very down to earth man and lead a simple life all throughout. Even though his sons were making good money he would teach music to kids and earn 4000 rupees happily. He loved to cycle in the lanes of Delhi when his sons could easily afford lavish cars for him. He loved Mika’s voice a lot and was very connected to him as well. He composed many beautiful shabads in his lifetime which were later turned into an album by Daler Mehandi with the inputs of his brothers to pay an ode to their father. Although the album was recorded in the year 1999 it was released on Teacher's Day 2015. The album is dedicated to their father and their present guru - "Sri Guru Granth Sahib" for their countless teachings.
He breathed his last on 12 Feb 2011 due to Kidney and Liver Failure.
